About Northern Lights
Northern Lights is the official community blog of North Star International. It was created by several established bloggers who are believing members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and who have first-hand experience with issues surrounding homosexuality. Northern Lights is to be a place where we and our readers can openly explore and discuss topics and issues of interest to the LDS community—and particularly as they relate to homosexuality and Mormon faith and culture—in an edifying and uplifting manner and within the framework of commitment to the beliefs and ideals of the Church. >>MORESubscribe to the Blog
“Because She Is a Mother” — A Mother’s Day Playlist
"She broke the bread into two fragments and gave them to her children, who ate with eagerness. 'She hath kept none for herself,' grumbled the sergeant.
"'Because she is not hungry,' said a soldier.
"'No,' said the sergeant, 'because she is a mother.'"
~ Victor Hugo

Sexual fluidity (and yes, it’s more common with women than men)
As Dr. Kinsey observed, “The living world is a continuum in each and every one of its aspects.” (Kinsey, Pomeroy, & Martin, Sexual Behavior in the Human Male, pp. 639, 647) I have read countless books about human sexuality, sexual … Continue reading
I’m a “Widow”, Again.
I sit on the couch this Thursday night, alone. This isn’t an abnormal situation, as Pret has his group on Thursday night, so I am regularly alone on Thursday nights. But this night will be different. Pret will not come … Continue reading
All Things That Lie in Our Power
I sat in a crowded room, looking down at the bare feet of a young surgeon. My mother sat in a chair nearby along with my stepfather, other members of my family, my mother’s home teacher, and her bishop. The … Continue reading
Sorry, Guys, I Can’t Get Gay Marriage Out of My Head. At Least Not Yet
After my wife read my previous Northern Lights blog post on gay marriage, she made this observation: “Jan, I know you. You are a kind, compassionate man. You love people. However, sometimes you do not come across as such.” She … Continue reading
HuffPost Live discussion and public interest in ‘mixed-orientation marriages’

I Vehemently Oppose Gay Marriage, but Not Necessarily for the Reasons You Think I Do. So, Let’s Talk
Before I begin with my today’s post, I find necessary to make a disclaimer. Whatever I write here is probably controversial enough so that I want everyone to know that this is not an official North Star’s position and that … Continue reading
