BYU Daily Universe: “A legacy of compassion: Lehi couple says goodbye to firesides for Latter-day Saints with same-gender attraction”

July 18th, 2011

North Star community,

The following article in the BYU Daily Universe, “A legacy of compassion: Lehi couple says goodbye to firesides for Latter-day Saints with same-gender attraction,” is a worthy tribute of the love and tireless efforts of Fred and Marilyn Matis, who for almost 7 years have been hosting firesides for individuals and families dealing with same-gender attraction, first in their home and most recently in their local chapel. Fred and Marilyn have been and continue to be an invaluable presence in the North Star community.

Much love to you, Fred and Marilyn.

Live and Let Choose

July 11th, 2010

I live in Virginia and subscribe to a variety of local news RSS feeds. This week there was the usual mix of regional events and political gossip, but one article, in particular, caught my eye: Gay-to-straight camp run by local man praised, panned. The article, if you care to follow the link, describes how a Virginia man (who also happens to be LDS) has operated an organization for men seeking support for unwanted gay feelings. » Read more: Live and Let Choose

Today is December 1st and marks yet another World AIDS Day and I have to ask myself, what have I or anyone else accomplished?

Since December 1st 2005, which marked my first World AIDS Day being diagnosed positive, I have spent the day pondering the future of the fight against HIV/AIDS for myself and the world around me. Speaking from my own experience, the true cure for this disease, that has unfortunately taken record number of lives every day and is still the leading cause of death in most parts of Africa, is outreach, prevention and education. I am hopeful as I continually read more and more articles regarding the advances in medicine and science that both preserve people’s lives and looks for a permanent cure. » Read more: World AIDS Day 2009

A nice thing to read

November 11th, 2009

My buddy just sent me this link to a Salt Lake Tribune article on SLC adopting pro-gay statutes with LDS church support. Not earth-shattering by any means, but interesting to read because of the perceptions of people quoted in the article. Here are a few favorite quotes: » Read more: A nice thing to read

For Real(ity)?

October 25th, 2009

When reality TV exploded onto the screens back in 2000 with the first survivor, I was hooked. Admittedly, I stumbled upon the first episode of the season by accident, thinking that it was a documentary about scientists in the South Pacific, and I wanted to know why these researchers were more interested in talking smack about each other instead of doing their work. And even after I realized that it was American reboot of the European castaway reality show, I still watched every episode until the end of the season — every backstabbing, conniving episode. What’s that they say about slowing down to stare at car accidents?
