“All human beings—male and female—are created in the image of God. Each is a beloved spirit son or daughter of heavenly parents, and, as such, each has a divine nature and destiny. Gender is an essential characteristic of individual premortal, mortal, and eternal identity and purpose… We further declare that God has commanded that the sacred powers of procreation are to be employed only between man and woman, lawfully wedded as husband and wife.”

But whatever our struggles, we can call upon divine doctrine, the power of the Atonement, and the Holy Spirit for help and comfort.”

Relevant sections from the official, online 2010 Church Handbook 2 include Policies on Moral Issues (21.4): “Chastity & Fidelity” (21.4.5), “Homosexual Behavior & Same Gender Attraction” (21.4.6), and “Same-Gender Marriages” (21.4.10).

“Homosexual behavior violates the commandments of God, is contrary to the purposes of human sexuality, and deprives people of the blessings that can be found in family life and in the saving ordinances of the gospel. Those who persist in such behavior or who influence others to do so are subject to Church discipline. Homosexual behavior can be forgiven through sincere repentance…

“If members feel same-gender attraction but do not engage in any homosexual behavior, leaders should support and encourage them in their resolve to live the law of chastity and to control unrighteous thoughts. These members may receive Church callings. If they are worthy and qualified in every other way, they may also hold temple recommends and receive temple ordinances.”

Bishop’s Guide: Same-Sex Attraction

“Faithful and obedient Church members may feel same-sex attractions. The attraction alone is not sinful. While individuals do not choose such attractions, all individuals choose how to respond to them. While you may not understand the complexity of this matter, expressing love and acceptance to the individual is an important step to minister to him/her.”

MormonsAndGays.org: “Love One Another: A Discussion on Same-Sex Attraction”

On December 6, 2012, the Church launched a new website, MormonsAndGays.org, with the descriptive title “Love One Another: A Discussion on Same-Sex Attraction.” The following is a description of the project from MormonNewsroom.org:

“In an effort to encourage understanding and civil conversation about same-sex attraction, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has launched the website ‘Love One Another: A Discussion on Same-Sex Attraction.’ It features a number of videos from people who share real experiences from their own perspectives on a sensitive and sometimes emotionally charged topic.”

Released in July 2007, this booklet provides counsel for Latter-day Saints who experience same-gender attraction. It is also helpful for their priesthood leaders and family members.

This book is designed as a companion to studying the scriptures and the teachings of latter-day prophets. It contains brief, simple statements on gospel doctrines and principles, arranged alphabetically.

“If you find yourself struggling with sexual temptations, including feelings of same-gender attraction, do not give in to those temptations. Be assured that you can choose to avoid such behavior. You can receive the Lord’s help as you pray for strength and work to overcome the problem. As part of this process, you should seek counsel from your bishop or branch president. He will help you.”
