Single Adults :: Community & Resources
Because one of the most beautiful parts of the gospel is the revealed doctrine of eternal families, being unmarried can feel very discouraging. This predicament can be unpleasant regardless of who one may be attracted to, but it may seem that much more overwhelming when it seems impossible to find a person of the opposite gender to whom you feel, as Elder Oaks put it, "a great attraction." Whether marriage will happen during your mortal life or not, remember that God has promised every blessing to those who follow Him—and happiness in this life is one of those blessings. It is certainly possible to achieve peace and happiness as a single member of the church, regardless of your attractions.
The church has a great interest in its single members. President Faust said,
"We are deeply moved and sobered as we hear a common thread running through the expressions of many of our single members. For some, loneliness and discouragement are their most constant companions. One great soul who has a good bishop, a good home teacher, a good position, and comfortable circumstances said, 'I don't need more to do; I just need someone to do it with.' This becomes a matter of great concern when we consider that at least one-third of adult Church members are single."
Sorting out how to be happy as a single member of the church may end up contingent on sorting out how to understand and deal with same-gender attraction. As you seek additional helpful information and resources, be careful to choose those you can trust, since different sources may disagree on crucial points that could influence the entire course of your life. There are resources from the Church about spiritual issues, from the government and medical societies about health issues, and from other special interest groups about various social and political issues.
As individuals who believe in and are trying to live according to the principles and standards of the Church, we've tried to assemble a variety of resources that will help you to move forward in the gospel in a way that will be spiritually, emotionally, and socially enriching. Since you're here, we assume you are trying to live the gospel too, and we're glad. Welcome!
